Galleries 241-243, second floor
The objects in this installation have been grouped to approximate the sequence of activities during a tea ceremony: host and guest preparation; a light meal; sweet cakes and sake; a serving of “thick” tea; more sweets; and finally, a round of “thin” tea. Additionally, the video in gallery 244 provides an overview of a tea gathering.
Gallery 201, second floor
This grand Medieval portal originally served as the main entrance to the small Augustinian abbey church of Saint-Laurent in central France. At the suggestion of George Grey Barnard, sculptor and collector of Medieval architecture and sculpture, two smaller doorways were added on either side of the portal when it was installed in the Museum in the late 1920s.
